Based on 50 of the most recent public App Store reviews, sampled September 2026.

Step 1 — Stop the next charge

  1. On iPhone or iPad: Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions.
  2. Select Speak: Language LearningCancel Subscription.
  3. Check that it now says Expires and not Renews. If it still says Renews, it is not canceled.

Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. This is the single most common reason people keep getting charged.

Step 2 — Ask Apple for the charge back

Answer these and you'll get the exact wording to paste into Apple's form. Nothing is sent anywhere — it's generated in your browser.

A detail only you could write makes the request read as yours rather than a form letter.

Recent 1–2★ reviews of Speak: Language Learning on the App Store, about billing:

I tried the free trial and while I do feel like this is a great app I don’t find that it’s worth the cost to keep going. The price is insanely high compared to the competition in the App Store. I think it would draw in more people if it was made to be more affordable. I mean most of us are students 😞

Beware! I canceled my subscription on the day of the free trial and they still charged me. I contacted Apple for a refund and they denied so I appealed it and they still denied. I contacted an agent and said it’s based on the third party being the app. So they trick you into a YEAR subscription charge you almost $90 and if you cancel (still before the 1 week free trial is over” you will be charged for A FULL YEAR! Don't waste your money. The app doesn't work. It doesn't even acknowledge that I have said anything. I'm saying the words over and over and nothing is happening until it makes a sound that sounds like a failure, then proceed on as if I did a perfect job. Doesn't seem like a reliable app to learn a new language if it can't critique my pronunciation. Canceled subscription within first 10 min.

Questions

Can I get a refund after I already canceled Speak: Language Learning?

Yes. Canceling stops future renewals but does not refund a charge that already went through. You request that separately at reportaproblem.apple.com, and "I was charged after I canceled the subscription" is the reason to select.

How long do I have to ask for a refund?

Apple generally expects refund requests within 90 days of the charge. Ask as soon as you notice it — requests on recent charges are approved more often.

Apple declined my request. Is that the end?

No. A first decline is common and is often automated. You can submit the request again with more specific facts and ask for review by a senior advisor. If it is declined again, you can dispute the charge with your card issuer.

Will I lose access to Speak: Language Learning if I cancel?

You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. Canceling only stops the next renewal.
